Sad news for fans of Saas Fee’s big summer freestyle event: the 10th annual Ride competition has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

The freestyle event was due to take place on the Allalin glacier on 18 July, but unusually high temperatures and heavy rain forecast have forced its cancellation.

The weather conditions have prevented the terrain park team from preparing the kickers, central to the Big Air competition, to the required standards and in time for the event. Organisers, Ride Freesport and the Saas Fee lift company, took the decision to cancel this year’s contest because they felt that the high safety standards set for the athletes would be compromised.

Ironically, would-be summer skiers and boarders heading for the resort’s high slopes (or those of nearby Zermatt) can expect powder snow as a result of the forecast rain at lower elevations. So, the slopes at least should be in good shape.

The Saas Fee Ride has now been rescheduled to 17 July 2010.
