Europe’s biggest snowboard event, the Burton European Open, is heading for Switzerland in January.

Freestyle will be at the centre of interest in Laax, Switzerland when 500 riders participate in the Burton European Open Championships, the largest snowboard event in Europe.

The event is scheduled for 14-21 January 2006: a whole week of pipes, park and powder competitions are planned for the slopes of Crap Sogn Gion above Laax. Kids, upcoming riders and the world’s leading snowboarders will gather together to join in the fun, which is open to any budding freestyle riders. The first two days of the event are dedicated to the kids. The classic half-pipe event is said to be the one to watch: the 140m pipe allows the riders to perform up to eight tricks.

Back in the valley, the ‘Rider’s Palace’ will host the post-event party with live musical entertainment from a Swedish rock band.

Laax shares its ski area with Flims, a resort in the south-eastern corner of Switzerland. Laax Dorf is a quiet farming community, whilst the modern development at the base of the Crap Sogn Gion gondola has grown up around the winter sports’ trade. The Flims-Laax ski area offers 220km / 137 miles of relatively quiet pistes, hardly known among UK travellers.
