Tignes gears up for airwaves event

31st December 2008, by Chris Gill

Some of the best freestyle riders worldwide will be in Tignes next week (4-9 January) for five action-packed days of competition in the parks and pipes.

The Tignes Airwaves is back for a fifth year and top prize money of 150,000 euros. Competitions and training are run each day and evening. Skiercross and Fourcross mountain biking are the key events, along with half-pipe and big air. Skiercross is always exciting to watch, as the competitors race each other around the banked turns and jumps of the specially prepared course.

But 2009 also introduces some new elements: a mogul munching display that takes place in Les Bosses on Wednesday 7 January, and the Riders’ Cup - where Europe takes on America in a team freestyle event.

Current weather in Tignes for New Year’s Eve is: cloudy, with light snow flurries and strong winds at altitude (40km/h on the glacier) - but the good news is the weather is set fair for the first two days of 2009.
