Armada Skis, one of skiing’s first athlete-owned independent brands, has been bought out by Amer Sports Corporation — the Finland-based company that owns winter brands including Arc’teryx, Salomon and Atomic.

US brand Armada was founded in 2002 by legendary skiers JP Auclair, Tanner Hall, JF Cusson, Julien Regnier and Boyd Easley, as well as photographer Chris O’Connell. It has been based in Park City, Utah, since 2015, and there have been rumours that the company has been struggling.

Armada has annual net sales of around $10 million and was sold to Amer Sports Corporation for $4.1million — of which $2.5million will be paid in cash.

Michael Schineis, President of Amer Sports Winter Sports Equipment said: “The acquisition enables us to further accelerate, especially in the US market where Armada has a solid presence. Further, the acquisition is synergistic, as we have already in the past collaborated with Armada through a joint manufacturing arrangement. We’re pleased to welcome Armada into our portfolio of strong, well-positioned brands.”

Amer Sports also owns Wilson tennis rackets and sports watch manufacturer Suunto.
