The Colorado ski resort of Aspen will tomorrow play host to a snowboard competition never seen before.

From 19 to 23 March, the first ever double halfpipe competition will be held at the base of Buttermilk Mountain, for the Red Bull Double Pipe event. The two competition-spec pipes — more than 550ft long, 68ft wide and 22ft tall — have been constructed side by side, to allow riders to jump between the two in a single run.

With rails, wallrides, channels and other features sprinkled throughout the double pipe, riders will be able to pick an endless number of lines and combination of tricks not normally possible in traditional haflpipe events. Riders will be judged on their technical abilities as well as their style, creativity and use of the course

The double pipe is the largest snow feature built in Aspen to date.

“Progression is a beautiful thing,” said John Rigney of Aspen Skiing Company. “It’s always incredibly exciting having the best athletes in the world competing here in Aspen/Snowmass, but to see this select group tackle an entirely new challenge at Buttermilk right here in our backyard is going to be amazing. We are proud to partner with Red Bull on another groundbreaking event.”

The Red Bull Double Pipe event is part of the Red Bull Signature series and open to the public. The snowboard competition will be aired on US TV (NBC) on 12 April. For more information, visit redbull.com/snow
