Aspen Mountain in Colorado has announced it will open this weekend

Last weekend it was Austria, now Aspen Mountain in Colorado has announced it will open for the coming weekend, following more snowfall in recent days.

Colorado recorded massive snowfalls over the past winter — with treacherous avalanche conditions prevailing in March. On Sunday, the US state said the 2018-19 snowpack was 161 per cent of the 1981-2010 average. Aspen received 396 inches, massively up on its 300in average, enabling it to open the Silver Queen Gondola from Saturday (25 May) to Monday 27 May, over memorial weekend. The Ajax Express will be open from 10am to 2pm, with lift tickets costing $54 per day and more snow on the way.

“With a pleasant dropping of additional snow in the last couple weeks, we are excited to kick off Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer operations with skiing/riding on Aspen Mountain,” said Katie Ertl, senior vice president of mountain operations. “The weekend will offer classic conditions for a Colorado multi-sport weekend with the town green and the mountain painted white.”

Meanwhile, Mammoth Mountain over in California recorded seven inches of snowfall on Monday 20 May, bringing the total snowfall this season to 705in at the summit. Fresh powder and blue skies means that the resort is expected to stay open to skiers and snowboarders until at least 7 July this year.
