Avalanche app launches in France

The app will give skiers information on avalanche risk, weather and snow quality

A new, free ski app will give skiers and snowboarders information on avalanche risks, weather and snow quality across the French Alps and the Pyrenees in both France and Andorra.

The app, called “Ski and Snow”, has been produced by Météo-France, the body responsible for issuing avalanche bulletins every day in the French mountains. The app is currently only available in French but will soon be available in English.

The data used by Météo-France to issue the avalanche bulletin will be used, along with reports from more than 100 ski patrollers across France and Andorra.

Ski and Snow will give at-a-glance information on temperature, wind gusts and weather forecast, the rain and snow limit as well as a detailed risk of avalanche for each mountain slope and altitude range, a commentary on the state of the snowpack and the quality and snow depth at the top and bottom of the slopes. The ski resorts closest to the user’s location will be automatically displayed.

The app will also use the GPS in a user’s smartphone to determine their location and, in partnership with ski resorts, provide the opening and closing times of lifts, the number of pistes and lifts open as well as piste maps.

Ski and Snow is available at no charge through the iTunes store and Google Play.
