British snowboarder Billy Morgan says he is “stoked” to have won his first World Cup medal — bronze in slopestyle at the finals in Sierra Nevada, Spain, last weekend.

The 23-year-old from Southampton has been enjoying a brilliant season. He won the big air competition at the London Freeze Festival in October, followed by seventh place at his first ever World Cup, in the big air event in Antwerpthen. Improving further he took fifth place at the opening slopestyle World Cup event in Copper Mountain in January, followed by a fourth at the World Championships in Stoneham less than two weeks later.

“I’m super stoked,” said Morgan, who is now ranked second in the world for snowboard slopestyle according to the FIS world ranking list. “Everybody was riding so well. I really worked hard for this. When the weather came in I thought that they would cancel it. I sat on the bubble and luckily survived.”

Despite tricky weather conditions in Spain leading to stop-start runs, Morgan scored 78.50 on his first run. His second outing produced 27.75, while 16-year-old Yuuki Kadono from Japan won gold with a score of 94.00. Canadian Maxence Parrot took silver.

British Snowboard head coach Hamish McKnight said after the event: “A great result for Billy and the team, and a great way to set up for next season and the lead up to Sochi.”

The bad weather sadly forced the cancellation of the women’s event, in which Brits Jenny Jones, Aimee Fuller and Katie Ormerod were due to compete.
