Going to Aspen and feel the need to have a pooch at your side? Well, help is at hand. The Aspen Animal Shelter is offering skiers the chance to rent a dog while they are in the upmarket ski town.

The shelter has a “no kill” policy, so they have dogs coming out of their ears and have devised a Rent-a-Pet programme that allows skiers to borrow dogs from anything from two hours up to an entire weekend.

Seth Sachson, director of the shelter which is recognized by the American Humane Association as one of the top 100 animal shelter programs in the United States, said: “Our motto is ‘Exercise your heart. Walk a dog or cuddle a cat.’ It’s meaningful for a shelter to have this type of program, because these are adoptable animals, and visitors and volunteers are helping the dogs get exercise and develop socialisation skills.”

Aspen, like most ski towns in the US, is very dog friendly, and pet pooches are welcomed in many hotels. If not, why not borrow one for your stroll? (Booties not included.)
