More than 70cm of snow has fallen since Perisher announced its season will close 8 October

The Australian ski resort of Perisher is continuing its bumper season with 1.2m of snow this week — the beginning of spring — following its announcement that the ski season is extended.

Perisher, in New South Wales, is owned by Vail Resorts and has been enjoying the best ski season in 17 years — despite the fact that this winter has been the warmest on record. After two metres of the white stuff during August, the resort announced last week that it would stay open longer than planned.

A statement issued by Perisher over the weekend (1 September) reads: “On the back of over two metres of snow falling through the month of August and plenty more snow forecast for next week we are extending the season through to the end of the New South Wales School Holidays. The four-resort areas of Perisher, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega are all looking superb …And with the most amount of snow since 2012 it’s the best in years.”

Since then, more than 70cm of snow has fallen, with more in the forecast — and it’s supposed to be day five of spring.

Earlier in August, a “significant” avalanche closed Hotham ski resort near Melbourne in Victoria following heavy snowfall.
