Skiing is coming to our TV screens in a new guise, The Alpine Games.

In the run-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics next year, Channel 4 will be screening a live prime-time show where 12 celebrities get to grips with skiing, along with luge, skeleton, slalom and ski jumping.

The Alpine Games is a working title for the programme that will run along the same lines as last year’s show “Splash” with British Olympic diver Tom Daley. The skiing celebrities will compete against each other in winter sports for 10 nights.

The celebrities will be trained by expert coaches and Olympians, and Verbier-based ski coach Warren Smith is one of those involved. He described his first day on 25 November as “a lot of fun”.

The series will be screened in early 2014, and feature clips of the celebrities training, slow-motion replays and point-of-view cameras so that viewers get the “ultimate piste-side experience”. The competitors will also be fitted with heart rate monitors.

Channel 4’s head of factual entertainment, Liam Humphreys, said: “This promises to be a hugely entertaining and ambitious event and we can’t wait to take both our contestants and the audience on a white knuckle, vertigo-inducing ride in the New Year.”

No details have yet been released about which resort it will be screened from, nor which celebrities are involved, but we’ll keep you updated with more information as we get it.
