If you haven’t yet booked for half term, now is the time to do so. Results of a survey released this week by Alpine Answers show that 80% of chalet accommodation for half term week (15 February) is sold — compared to 50% at the same point last year.

Skiers and snowboarders also need to be quick if they want to stay in a chalet over New Year. The week is nearly sold out — with 90% of chalet accommodation already booked, compared to 80% sold at this point in 2012. Easter 2014 has also sold better than last year, despite the fact that it falls later next year than 2013.

Alpine Answers has compiled its data on chalet availability from 143 separate chalet companies that offer 1,145 chalet properties in the Alps and North America.

Despite media reports of a recovery in the British snowsports market, Alpine Answers reports that chalet bookings overall are marginally down year-on-year — with 47.25% sold on 18 October 2013, compared to 54.17% on 18 October 2012.

Simon Hoskyns, director of Alpine Answers, said January 2014 is also less well sold than January 2013 was at this point last year.

He added: “There are two obvious weeks at this stage of the season where chalet prices may have to tumble in order to sell — 8/9 February and 22/23 March.”
