Chamonix ready for adventure film fest

12th August 2011, by Chris Gill

Chamonix’s Adventure Film Festival kicks off on 16 August, and will include the European premier of the film ‘Cold’ – following the first winter ascent of an 8000m peak.

The festival runs from 16-24 August, with the main film set taking place at the Majestic Congress (19-21 August). There will be open-air screenings in Les Houches and the event kicks off with an Adventure Photography course.

All of the films shown will be judged by an international jury that includes Andy Perkins – a mountain guide and organiser of the UK’s Kendal Mountain Film Festival (held every November).

One of the highlights is the premier showing of ‘COLD’ by Anson Fogel, and presented by Alpinist Simone Moro. Moro was part of the team that set out to climb Gasherbrum II, one of Pakistan’s 8000m mountains, in winter conditions, along with Cory Richards of the US and Denis Urubko.

Richards filmed their gripping journey through severe cold and treacherous conditions that nearly killed them. But the expedition was the first to succeed, where 16 or so others have failed over the past 20 years.

COLD’ recounts their story, portraying high-altitude mountaineering at its extreme and the determination of these climbers to succeed against the odds. Whether you are gripped by their mission or think it’s madness, the film has stunning footage that is sure to send that chilling tingle up the spine of any wild mountain enthusiast.

COLD’ has already won ‘Best Mountain Film’ at the Telluride, and made the official selection in Banff, Canada . Now it comes to Europe …
