A Chamonix tour operator has compiled a top tip sheet of advice to help skiers avoid being caught out by the ever-present chalet scams that circulate the internet at this time of year.

Every winter, people are caught out by scams from fake — but very professional looking — websites offering luxury ski chalets for thousands of euros less than they should be. The scams often dupe skiers out of both their hard-earned money and their much longed-for ski holiday.

Tour op Chamonix All Year says “not a season goes by where we aren’t contacted by distraught holidaymakers who have been conned out of a booked ski chalet”.

The company has put together advice on how to spot a scam, and ways to stay safe online while booking accommodation — including easy tips such as phone the accommodation rather than communicate only by email, and paying with a credit card which will give you some protection. But there is more you can do — such as research its availability, social media and of course checking company registrations.

“If you feel that something just isn’t quite right, follow our steps … to give you peace of mind,” says Chamonix All Year, which has produced a downloadable visual guide that you can share among friends to stop others falling victim to chalet fraud.
