Skiers and snowboarders in Chile had a nice surprise on Friday, when the resort of Valle Nevado opened two weeks early thanks to heavy early snowfall.

Thanks to El Niño weather patterns, the Chilean Andes currently receiving fantastic dumps of snow — with three feet of snow in Valle Nevado at present, with more predicted this week.

“The amount of snow received in the past few weeks has already exceeded expectations, and promises an even better season than previously rumoured,” said a spokesman for the resort.

Although most of the pistes in the resort opened for skiing on Friday, 13 June, Valle Nevado’s hotels will remain closed until 27 June. Selected restaurants will open for day skiers.

Valle Nevado offers the most extensive slopes in Chile and is used by ski and snowboard teams from around the world for summer training — as well as around 750,000 Canadians and Americans who head south in search of summer snow each year.

The country’s first gondola opened here last year, and a new restaurant, La Leñera, opens this season as part of a $150million master development project that seeks to turn Valle Nevado into the first full service mountain village in the region.
