Colorado launches ski Safety Month

National Safety Month will include demonstrations of avalanche dog work
Ski resorts across Colorado are to host a month-long series of programmes and activities to encourage skiers and snowboarders to keep safe on the slopes.
National Safety Month takes place throughout January in resorts including Aspen, Vail, Arapahoe Basin and Telluride, where skiers will be encouraged to wear appropriate safety equipment, ski within control and to their own abilities. There will be demonstrations from avalanche dogs, by ski patrols in each of the resorts, ski helmet giveaways, winter vehicle safety checks, as well as backcountry awareness and avalanche beacon training.
Each resort is hosting its own series of events — Aspen is hosting 90 across all four of its mountains throughout January — and skiers and snowboarders are being urged to learn the Colorado Ski-Country USA (CSCUSA) Your Responsibility Code:
• Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
• People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
• You must not stop where you obstruct a piste, or are not visible from above.
• Whenever starting downhill or merging into a slope, look uphill and give way to others.
• Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
• Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed pistes and out of closed areas.
• Before using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
