Comedy festival moves to Mayrhofen

Go to Mayrhofen in April?
Fancy a good old chuckle? Wind down with a few laughs? There are events galore throughout the Alps during the season, but the Comedy Festival is proving a popular alternative to the usual high octane music gigs. This winter though, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
The Altitude Festival claims to be the only bilingual comedy event in Europe, and for the past four seasons it has taken place in Méribel, France. In 2011 the festival moves to Mayrhofen, combining with one of Europe’s biggest end-of-season bashes – Snowbombing.
Tickets have recently gone on sale for the event, which takes place over six days from 4-9 April. It includes British comedians in the line-up such as Dublin-born Andrew Maxwell, nominated for a comedy award at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Or Tony Alderton – described as utterly mad but hilarious. Marcus Brigstock, Mark Walker (of the Les Dennis Laughter Show fame) and Rufus Hound have also signed up again.
Gareth Cooper, Director for the Volvo Snowbombing Festival said: ‘Just as I thought Snowbombing couldn’t get any funnier, we go and put the Altitude Comedy Festival straight in. This is a great step forward for Snowbombing and we are going to make sure that these comedy nights have more than a touch of the Snowbombing randomness. Don’t expect straight forward stand up, get ready for the utterly ridiculous.’
Joining forces with Snowbombing means visitors will also have the opportunity to buy tickets to those events too. But the Altitude Sessions are separate tickets, costing £20 as early bird tickets (limited number available) or £25 at full price.
The Comedy Festival will take place in Mayrhofen’s new venue, Europahaus, featuring cabaret style seated tables. Tickets including a full dinner (drinks not included). Monday and Tuesday’s shows will run from 7pm to 11pm with a late night show running from 9pm to 1am on Wednesday.
Of course, if you’re pining for some lively event in Méribel, there’ s always the Little World Festival from 12-19 March. The resort hosts over 40 music gigs during that week, including performances from pop band The Feeling. And various films will get screenings too. So there ought to be something going on to suit all tastes.
