Deer Valley resort changes hands

Deer Valley Resort in Utah has been bought by the same company that owns Mammoth and Squaw Valley
Deer Valley Resort in Utah has been bought by the same company that now owns Mammoth and Squaw Valley in California and Steamboat and Winter Park in Colorado.
The deal between Deer Valley and KSL Capital Partners, LLC and Henry Crown and Company was announced yesterday, 21 August, with the transaction subject to closing conditions — but expected to be finalised before the start of the 2017-18 ski season. The purchase price has not been disclosed. KSL Capital Partners, LLC and Henry Crown and Company this summer bought Intrawest, Mammoth Resorts and Squaw Valley Ski Holdings.
Deer Valley is close to Park City in Utah — just a mile from the end of its Main Street, in fact. It is overtly upmarket, but unpretentious, with 2.026 acres of pistes and 21 lifts over a ski area up to 2,915m in height.

With the purchase of Deer Valley, the new company now owns 13 different ski resorts across North America, totalling approximately 20,000 skiable acres. These include Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain, Snow Summit, Bear Mountain and June Mountain in California, Steamboat and Winter Park in Colorado, Blue Mountain Resort in Ontario, Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Stratton Mountain in Vermont and Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia.
Interestingly, while it is part of the new company, Aspen Snowmass resorts remains independent of this transaction — with a spokesman for the new company saying “Aspen remains independent, and we will explore opportunities to work together when and where it is appropriate.”
Bob Wheaton, president and general manager of Deer Valley said: “We are thrilled to join this impressive portfolio with 12 other resorts and are excited about the opportunities this transaction will create for our guests, staff, and the community of Park City. Deer Valley is a special place and being part of its growth has been one of the great joys of my life.
“Joining this portfolio of resorts will enable Deer Valley to build upon its outstanding traditions and further enhance our ability to provide our guests with a world class skiing experience. I look forward to working with them as we develop our vision for the future of the resort and the new company.”
