Easyjet has today celebrated the launch of its new UK base at London Southend Airport – the first new airport in the south east for decades. And included in the new European flights from Southend will be a winter ski service to Geneva, Switzerland.

Southend is the airline’s 23rd base in Europe and 11th in the UK. To introduce the new airport, a special inaugural flight took off from there to Barcelona – one of nine possible routes this summer.

The Geneva route will be the tenth and start in time for next winter 2012/13. The airline will operate three services a week, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from mid-December. Seats will go on sale on 19 April.

Southend airport was once London’s third biggest, as well as the home of Freddie Laker’s first airline venture. It will offer an alternative way to fly to and from London; the new terminal - which was recently officially opened by Secretary of State for Transport Justine Greening MP – is close to a new train station, with good links towards central London.

The summer destinations that will be offered from 2 April are: Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona Berlin, Faro, Ibiza, Jersey, Majorca and Malaga.
