A fire has destroyed the historic Rifugio Guglielmina above Alagna in the Monterosa ski area. The announcement was made on the resort and hut websites, stating that the fire took hold on Thursday morning and local rescue services were unable to reach the Col d’Olen due to the strong winds affecting the mountain at the time.

The splendid old hut sits at 2880m just below the ridge above Alagna, near the main lifts. It dates back to 1878 and has been run as a hotel by the Guglielmina family since then, and it has played a major role in the mountaineering history in the Monterosa area. It was also a popular spot for simple lunches in the sun, being only yards from the piste.

Skiers flocked here to take advantage of a night or two at altitude too, followed by grand off-piste descents from the summit ridges, or ascending nearby peaks. Inside, the hut epitomised traditional rustic charm, with its period styling. There were 40 bedrooms.

The cause of the fire has not yet been specified. Guests booked into the hut during the winter season will be helped to find alternative lodging, but should call 00 +39 0163 922993 for advice.
