Among all the doom and gloom about bare patches in the Alps — Ski Welt in Austria becoming the latest to delay its opening date — one ski resort is remaining upbeat.

Verbier is offering free lift passes to anyone who turns up in a Santa suit to celebrate the start of the season. The Swiss ski resort has had its slopes open at weekends for the past month, but tomorrow (Saturday, 6 December) it opens the resort full-time.

The fun starts in Le Châble at 8.45am, with the traditional season-opening free coffee and croissants offered to skiers until 10am. There will be a DJ and skydiving show at Chalet Carlsberg at Attelas from 1pm, followed by free hot wine for the skiing and snowboarding Santas from 3pm — with a group photograph.

Later in the day Valaisan pop-rock group FIREFLY will be playing at the Médran Café from 4pm, followed by a free screening of the Bec des Rosses film at the Verbier Cinema at 8pm, though seats must be reserved with the tourist office (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or +41 (0) 27 775 38 88).

Quite frankly, we wish we were there!
