Heavy snow is on its way to the Alps at the end of next week — particularly the northern Alps.

Over the course of this weekend and the start of next week, a little snow is forecast but towards the end of next week there is the strong possibility of massive dumps of snow — of perhaps more than 2m in some areas.

“Of course, it is still a long way off of course, but all the different weather models have been very consistent over the last few days in developing a vigorous area of low pressure to the east or north-east of the UK late next week,” says our snow guru Fraser Wilkin of Weather To Ski.

“This will allow an unusually strong and highly unstable north-westerly airstream to engulf Western Europe and bring massive quantities of snow - to the northern half of the Alps in particular.”

Will we see a repeat of the weekend after Christmas when thousands were stranded getting to and from ski resorts across France? We hope not, but Mr Wilkin advises: “Anyone travelling to the Alps next weekend would be well advised to keep a close eye on our updates.”

We will publish a snow report on Thursday, but keep an eye on Today in the Alps on weathertoski.co.uk for daily updates.
