Plans have been unveiled for a huge indoor ski centre to be built near the Olympic Park in London.

The snow dome will feature runs for different abilities, the longest of which will be 300m, as well as snowboard ramps and an ice rink. It will cost up to £200 million and will adjoin the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, which is funding the project.

An area of beginners and children will be incorporated into the London snow dome, which is set to rival Ski Dubai, the world’s largest indoor snow centre. Après ski with shops, a hotel and restaurants has also been planned.

The snow centre will be twice the size of the snow domes at Milton Keynes and Hemel Hempstead and aims to attract three million visitors per year when it opens in 2015.

The project was announced last Friday, on the even of the first anniversary of the London Olympic Games, and six months before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The plans will be greeted favourably by the UK ski industry, which has been long scratching its head as to how to introduce more youngsters to the sport. This year, the ski industry reported the first signs of growth after four years of decline.
