Indoor ski centres open this weekend

The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead will reopen for skiing on Friday (7 August)

Indoor ski centres across the UK are preparing to open their doors following months of closure due to Covid-19.

Ski centres, along with other indoor leisure facilities including ice rinks, bowling alleys, casinos and theatres, were due to open on 1 August, but two weeks ago Boris Johnson temporarily suspended the plans due to a rise in the coronavirus infection rate.

But following discussions between Snow Sports England and the Department of Digital Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), ski centres have been given the all-clear to open and SnowDome Tamworth leads the charge tomorrow (Thursday 6 August). While the facility’s ice rink, ice track and snow fun park will remain closed until further notice, the SnowDome is open for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing.

The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead will reopen on Friday (7 August), along with the Snozones in Milton Keynes and Castleford — which will open their doors at noon on what promises to be a scorching day.

Chill Factore in Manchester has chosen not to reopen until Monday 17 August due to partial re-introduction of lockdown measures in the area and an “element of uncertainty”, but sessions are now bookable online. But the facility has played a big fight against coronavirus by partnering with Company Shop Group and storing surplus food that had been destined for the catering trade earlier in the year.

Outdoor dry ski slopes have opened across England, from Snowtrax in Dorset to Suffolk Ski Centre in Ipswich, as well as Cardiff Ski and Snowboard Centre in Wales.

In Scotland, however, Snow Factor in Glasgow remains closed until further notice.
