Roxette: from Sweden to Ischgl in 2011

Pop duo Roxette are lined up for Ischgl’s legendary season-opener concert, taking place on Saturday 26 November.

Anyone remember ‘Joyride’, ‘Dressed for Success’, ‘Listen to your Heart’ and ‘The Look’, among the chart hit singles? Real punchy little numbers, and heart-string-tugging ballads that keep you humming them all day. [And a WTSS web editor favourite!]

The 80’s Swedish duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, enjoyed worldwide success from the late 1980s until the mid-1990s, gaining almost 20 UK Top 40 hits. The pair have been one of the biggest music exports from Sweden since Abba, and they will be in Ischgl to perform on the village stage this November.

And the band is still going strong, returning from a seven-year break to play the European Party Crasher tour in 2009, followed by a full World Tour in 2010. Of their handful of great albums, ‘Look Sharp’ was probably the best known – released in 1988 and featuring most of the hits above. ‘Listen to your Heart’ and ‘Dressed for Success’ became top three singles in the Swedish chart at the time, and continue to receive regular radio airplay.

Ischgl sets the stage: the season opening concerts take place in the village.

Entry to the concert is free to two-day lift pass holders. Skiers and boarders will be able to hit the slopes from Friday 25 November, when hopefully the lifts will be up and offering some early-season sport as planned.

Packages are available too: For example, from 24 to 27 November, three nights’ accommodation with breakfast and three day VIP skipass starts at 199 euros per person. The nearest airport is Innsbruck, with flights from BA and easyJet operating for much of the winter season. Or you can arrive via Munich or Zurich.

Ischgl has some other exciting news for the season ahead too: yet another fast chairlift is due to open. The six-seat Sonnenbahn B5 chair replaces the Sonnenlift T-bar at Idalp, which will make it much easier for novices to access some of the easier blue runs. Visitors will also note that work has begun to upgrade the Pardatschgrat gondola; it won’t be ready for this winter, but we’ll hope will prove a worthwhile queue-buster when complete.

App fans will be able to download the resort’s new iPhone and Android app, which uses a new GPS tracking system.
