Protect Our Winters (POW) is launching a “2000 Challenge” this July to highlight that we need to take action to stop snow at 2000 metres decreasing by 70 per cent in many locations.

Skiers and snowboarders are being asked to help run, hike, swim, walk, climb or do anything for “2000” — whether that’s miles, feet or even metres — to raise money and awareness for the #SaveThe2000 July challenge. The challenge is for individuals and teams, and can be done in two or 31 days, to highlight the fact that unless we make drastic changes to our lifestyles and way we live, snow above 2000m will decrease by up to 70 per cent in many locations.

POW is a non-profit organisation set up in 2007 buy pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones to help passionate outdoor people, including skiers and snowboarders, protect the places and lifestyles they love from climate change. Every penny raised from the #SaveThe200 challenge will go to fund Protect Our Winter’s work and programmes that fight the climate crisis; to apply pressure on policy makers and educate people to make changes to their lives.

Our web editor Abi Butcher is currently taking POW UK’s Carbon-Literacy Course — it’s an affordable £35 for four fascinating, two-hour sessions. She will blog about it at the end but if you’re keen to learn more, you can sign up here to the next courses running in July and September.
