Two very different ski resorts are opening this weekend. In Austria, the world-famous resort of Kitzbühel will begin the winter season on Saturday, 14 October, one of the first non-glacier ski areas to open for the 2017/18 season. In Colorado, the ski area of Arapahoe Basin is preparing to open tomorrow (13 October).

Kitzbühel will be kicking off the new winter season at the Resterkogel, accessed via the Kitzbüheler Alpen Panoramabahn cable car. The slopes will be open over the weekend, then close until the following Saturday, 21 October, from when they will be open daily until the end of the season. “Resterhöhe Special” day tickets will be cost €35 for adults, €17 for teens and €10 for children. On 26 October, Kitzbühel’s Hahnenkamm/Walde area in will open for skiing, too, with “Walde Special” day tickets available at the same price. In the US, the ski area of Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, famed for its long season, will open its Black Mountain Express lifts on Friday, 13 October, opening up access to the intermediate High Noon run.

In France, the glacier resort of Les 2 Alpes has cancelled its season opening festival due to unseasonably warm weather. The resort was due to open 21 October for ten days, closing again before the winter season begins in earnest.
