This weekend is nearly your last chance to go skiing or snowboarding this season — and enjoy snow cover that many in the Alps are saying has been the best in 40 or 50 years.

Though conditions are now varying from resort to resort, it has been snowing this week and last, and more snow is forecast for tomorrow and the weekend.

Up to 25cm of snow is forecast across Austria within the next 24 hours — with 24cm due in Sölden and 18cm due in Obertauen. Slightly less is due in France, with up to 17cm to fall in Alpe d’Huez and 9cm in Val Thorens, though we’ve heard reports of blizzards all week places like in Avoriaz.

A sprinkling of fresh snow is likely to fall in Switzerland — though higher resorts such as Zermatt are reporting continuing fantastic conditions “Fantastic! It’s like in February we’re still skiing till the village,” says Janine Imsech from Zermatt tourist office. And Italy is faring better with 13cm due in Livigno and 11cm due in Madesimo.

We’ve trawled through the best of the bargains again and you can find catered chalets leaving this weekend for just £199!

And if you go away skiing in April, do please send us a report from your trip, we’re still on the lookout for updates from readers, which are so vital for us in producing Where to Ski and Snowboard.
