Let battle commence

Let battle commence

In a racing-meets-orienteering style challenge event, which hails from the USA originally, the Big Mountain Battle is coming to Europe for the first time. And the host is Les Gets in France.

On four dates during the coming few weeks, the Big Mountain Battle will bring together teams of two racers that will set out to win the snow sports challenge. The aim of the event is for the teams to pass through set checkpoints around the ski area in under three hours. Any competent skier or boarder can take part. And each event has a different ‘battle’ name.

Each group will be armed only with a route map, while their progress will be monitored via the Flaik GPS system. The teams will need to locate the various compulsory routes and then complete them as quickly as possible. To find them, they will need to plan their own way around the ski area carefully.

Sounds like a lot of fun. It’s a challenge event open to skiers and snowboarders (not beginners), and at the end of each day there’s a prize giving, concert and dinner party to enjoy.

The first of the four events begins on Saturday 21 January in Les Gets, from 12:15pm. Information and registration can be found on the resort’s website: http://www.lesgets.com/bmb

The dates:

Saturday 21 January 2012: The Igloo Battle.
Saturday 28 January 2012: The Bâ Bar Battle.
Saturday 4 February 2012: The Zebra 3 Battle.
Saturday 11 February 2012: The Bowling Battle.

And if you’re heading state-side to North America, there are Big Mountain Battles planned for Fernie (11 Feb), Squaw Valley (18 Feb), Taos (4 Feb) and Keystone (28 Jan), and more …
