The cable cars will start operating in the picturesque ski resort of Zermatt on 8 June as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease in Switzerland.

Hotels, accommodation, hiking trails, public transport and restaurants, bars and shops are already open in some form, along with sport facilities such as tennis courts and golf courses. Sports activities like yoga and guided mountain tours that don’t involve physical contact are allowed in groups of up to five people

If the government continues to follow its plan laid out for easing restrictions, spontaneous meetings of up to 30 people will be allowed from tomorrow (30 May) and on 6 June mountain railways, campsites, swimming pools and cinemas will open in Zermatt.

The Zermatt tourist office said in a statement: “If the authorities allow, the cable cars will probably resume operation on 8 June 2020. Most hotels and holiday apartments are also opening their doors for the summer season. Activities such as hiking, biking, mountain climbing, golf, summer skiing and many more will be possible this summer in the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination.”

The resort says it is “looking ahead with confidence” and will continue with construction of the new Kumme gondola lift, the Matterhorn glacier ride II as well as refurbishment of hotels including Ginabelle, Schlosshotel, Cervo and Hemizeus.
