Swiss has long been distinguished from rival airlines flying to the Alps by its free ski carriage policy, but now others are competing.

Monarch airlines is offering free ski carriage on new routes introduced for this winter’s ski season.

The new routes from UK airports are to Munich (for resorts such as Söll), the brand new Friedrichshafen (for resorts such as St Anton and Davos), Grenoble (for resorts such as La Plagne, Les Arcs and Val D’Isère) and Innsbruck (for St Anton and Mayrhofen).

All return flights for trips until 30 April 2013, and booked before 31 December 2012, qualify for free ski or snowboard carriage — saving £39.98.

And Helvetic Airways, which launched its three times a week service from Bristol to Zurich last December, has confirmed it will continue to offer free ski carriage.

Flights operate every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday through the winter season.

Jason Wescott from Bristol Airport, said: “This is great news for skiers from the south west and south wales travelling to the Swiss Alps this winter. The winter sports equipment offer covers one pair of ski boots, one pair of ski poles, and a pair of skis or a snowboard.”
