More heavy snow on the way to the Alps

St Anton earlier this week: further heavy snow is expected in areas late next week
Heavy snow has “transformed” the landscape in Austria this week, with up to 80cm falling in parts. It’s welcome news for ski resorts who have been desperate to keep skiers and snowboarders happy with increasingly difficult conditions.
This week’s snow report from Weather To Ski (which you can read here) details where the snow has fallen — quite widely across Vorarlberg, the Tirol, Salzburgland, Styria and Upper Austria reports our snow guru Fraser Wilkin. More is forecast next week.
“There will be a bit more snow this weekend, mostly in Austria but not as heavy as the recent falls,” Fraser told us this morning.
“Then some moderate falls spreading to many other northern parts of the Alps on Tuesday and Wednesday. Potentially the biggest falls, however, will be towards the end of next week (and next weekend) when we expect some big snowfalls. Again the north is mostly likely to be favoured at this stage.”
A spokesman from St Anton told Where to Ski and Snowboard that it was snowing heavily on Thursday morning.
“We’ve had good conditions on the pistes, because they’ve been groomed well and we’ve been making snow,” said Wilma Himmelfreundpointner. “Skiers who wanted to go off-piste have been very frustrated, but it looks like everything’s going to be ok now though.”
There have been flurries and light dustings across France and Italy, with enough to freshen the pistes but nothing significant — though more snow is forecast next week.
This weekend, Fraser Wilkin says it will be cold — down to -40c in some areas when combined with wind chill — so if you’re going skiing, take the winter woollies.
If you’re headed stateside, however, it is snowing big time.
