It was a better performance from Vonn and a secure win from Svindal, as more World Championship competitions were fought for and won in Germany on Sunday and Monday.
Lyndsey Vonn came back from a few disappointing recent results to claim silver in Sunday’s women’s downhill event. But, while she flew with ease to grab a podium spot, Vonn also denounced the course ‘downright unsafe’ in response to this week’s freeze-thaw snow conditions.
The organisers have been struggling to maintain the Kandahar run in sufficiently safe form, given the lack of fresh snow and recent warm weather, and at present it is claimed to be on the limit. Those racers not among the early starters have been faced with a much bumpier ride. Unfortunately, no snow is forecast for the next few days – and it remains mild.
But the racing has gone on ... with Elisabeth Goergl of Austria taking the gold and Maria Riesch of Germany coming back from illness to reach the podium third spot. Goergl’s win adds to her super-G title last week.
And so the World Championships moved onto the next phase: the combined events. The men’s super-combined took place on Monday 14 February, with Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal retaining his title. His combined time for the slalom and downhill races was 2:54:51 seconds. Italy’s success this week continued too, with Christof Innerhofer finishing with a silver medal to add to his already won gold and bronze. Svindal’s success in the super-combined comes just days after he fell during Saturday’s downhill event.
Ivica Kostelic, the overall World Cup leader and the winner of three combined races this season, did not take part. Instead he is resting up for the slalom events planned for later in the week. And there were other big name disappointments in the super-combined: Bode Miller crashed out and Ted Ligety also failed to finish.
