New chairlift and transfers for Megève

A new six-man chairlift will open up a previously little skied area of Megeve

A new six-man chair lift will open up a previously little skied area of Megève, and an increased Alpybus service will make the French ski resort more accessible than ever before.

The new chair lift will replace a rickety old one at the small village of Chattrix, near St. Nicholas de Veroce. John Kinnear of Stanford Skiing, a family-run ski company that has been specialising in Megève for 20 years says; “The Epaule run from Mont Joly is in my view the best piste in Megève. It’s about 7km starting on a ridge with stunning close-up views of Mont Blanc and finishes winding through the trees to Chattrix. It was only spoilt by the slow lift back and an exposed corner near the bottom, which faces west, making the snow heavy at the end of season. The corner is being redesigned and the new express lift will make it even more enjoyable.”

Where to Ski & Snowboard co-editor Dave Watts agrees, adding: “The Grande Epaule run along a ridge at the top of the Mont d’Arbois area has stunning views of Mont Blanc. To make the most of them you need to continue down towards Mont Blanc and the village of St Nicolas de Veroce in the valley beneath the mighty mountain. But until now, the only way back from descents towards St Nicolas has been by tediously slow chair- or drag-lifts. The new sixpack will make this spectacular run much more fun. It will also mean a quicker and more comfortable way back from a couple of enticing mountain huts, including Refuge de Porcherey, one of my favourites of the many huts in the Megève ski area.”

In addition to the new chairlift, Alpybus will be increasing services from Geneva to Megève (a 75-minute transfer) dramatically for the 2019/20 winter season. Last year, Stanford Skiing was running some services with the company, but not many.

“Now, due to our tie in with them, they’ve increased their timetable dramatically so it’s about one an hour on Saturdays and Sundays and on Wednesdays and Thursdays it’s one an hour in the mornings and evenings and one every two hours in the middle of the day — perfect for our transfers,” explains Elizabeth from Stanford Skiing.
