New England resort opens first in US

In a surprise announcement on Friday, it was a New England ski resort that became the first resort to open in the US – and not one of the usual two contenders, Arapahoe Basin or Loveland.
Sunday River opened for the season on Friday, pushing Colorado’s Loveland and Arapahoe Basin into second and third places. The resort has been the first to open in New England for the past four years, but this year managed to win the overall race as the Colorado resorts struggled against a spell of warmer weather. And they have since opened a second trail and an early season terrain park.
Colder weather recently has helped Sunday River to go into snowmaking overdrive, pumping out the stuff to back up some natural snowfall. And Locke Mountain was ready to go, just two days ahead of Loveland.
Check out our Snow section for the opening day video. Arapahoe Basin opens today - Monday 25 October, a little later than last season but with natural snowfall arriving on time!
