New flights launched to Scandinavia

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has launched the first direct flights from the UK to the new Scandinavian Mountains Airport (SCR), which offers easy access to ski resorts in the Sälen and Trysil regions of Sweden and Norway.
The airport has cost more than £100 million to build and has been four years in the making — it was first announced in April 2014 (read our original news story here). The new flights — which begin 28 December and are now on sale — will operate every Saturday leaving London Heathrow at 06:40 and arriving in SCR at 10:00. The return flight will also operate on Saturdays, leaving Scandinavian Mountains Airport at 11:25 arriving in Heathrow at 12:55. The service will continue all winter, until Saturday 11 April,
While there are around 250 ski slopes in region, of most interest to British skiers will be Trysil, Norway’s largest ski area with four inter-linked mountains — and just a 40-minute transfer the new airport. Sälen in Sweden is even closer, with just a 25-minute transfer from Scandinavian Mountains Airport. Its four areas of Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället have more than 100 slopes between them.
Prices start from £73 each way, or from £128 return in SAS Go Light, the airline’s fare which includes a carry-on bag only, as well as several services to save time, including mobile check-in and seat selection. SAS and SkiStar — which operates the Scandinavian areas — say they are “entering into a strategic partnership which will simplify the booking procedure for all components of a ski package including accommodation, transfers, ski passes and lessons”.
Karl Sandlund, Executive Vice President Commercial, SAS, comments, “We are delighted that SAS is able to offer the first international flights to the new Scandinavian Mountains Airport. A short transfer time and weekend flights from the UK mean we hope lots of British winter sport enthusiasts will travel to explore one of Scandinavia’s leading winter sport regions. Already working in partnership, we will continue to develop our collaboration with SkiStar to make booking a ski trip as simple as possible”.
SAS will also operate flights from the new airport to Aalborg (weekly) and Copenhagen (bi-weekly).
