The iconic Tyrolean ski resort of Kitzbühel will be the first non-glacier ski area in the Alps to open for the 2019/20 season.

On 19 and 20 October it will be opening pistes served by the Resterkogel fast quad chair in the Resterhöhe sector, reached by using the Panoramabahn Kitzbüheler Alpen II gondola.

On 26 October it will be opening pistes on its famous Hahnenkamm mountain.

But we’ll have to wait till December to try out the newly renovated Fleckalmbahn gondola. This is set to re-open on 14 December after an extensive renovation project costing €27.5 million. The previous gondola was 35 years old, and works began in the spring of this year to upgrade to larger, faster and more stylish cabins. Each will have heated leather seats, accommodating ten (the previous cable car took six passengers per cabin) and to improve the surroundings, the number of towers needed to support the lift has been reduced — from 29 down to 22. The base station is in the Klausen district of Kirchberg at 814m and the top station is 1801m at Ehrenbachhöhe.

The works are part of an ongoing series of developments to the Austrian ski area, planned to cement its status as a leading winter sports destination. The cabins will be less susceptible to winds, meaning a smoother ride, as well as a quieter ride and one that will use less energy. When re-opened, will carry 2,590 passengers an hour.

The new lift is a state-of-the-art machine, with the cabins travelling at an unprecedented 7 m/s.
