The French ski resort of Val Thorens is replacing its Moraine chair with a 10-seater gondola to significantly improve the comfort of skiers.

The new €14million lift — which will be open in time for this coming winter season — will serve the Moraine and Genepi slopes above Val Thorens which are idea for beginners. It runs from Chalet du Thorens, with an option to take another chair up to the chilly top of Glacier de Thorens.

The ski resort is also adding a fourth blue run to the Plein Sud sector, to ease congestion among skiers returning to Meribel and Courchevel at the end of the day. The run goes to the top of Val Thorens via a picturesque balcony route overlooking the village.

Elsewhere in Val Thorens, a new mountain refuge is opening beside the Lac du Lou. The new 31-bed Vallon du Lou is a typical mountain chalet, with a large dining room and on-site guardian to welcome hikers in the summer and winter. The chalet — which has been refurbished and extended from the original refuge on site at a cost of €1.2million — will also serve as a base for people ice diving beneath the frozen lake.

Within Val Thorens itself, a new five-star residence is opening this winter as part of the Montana Village. The residence will comprise 17 south-facing hotel-serviced apartments and offer direct access from the ski room to the slopes, directly opposite the meeting point for ski lessons.
