A new five-star hotel and two new pistes will open this winter in the popular Italian ski resort of Courmayeur.

The two new pistes will run down the Arp ridge, overlooking the southern side of Mont Blanc. Since the Apetta lift was dismantled decades ago, this area has been the preserve of off-piste skiers who have access the ridge from the Arb cable car. But this winter the Arp will be open to piste skiers — though they’ll still have to have some bottle. There will be a 700m-long north-facing red and a 600m black piste, with a gradient of 70% — plus all the off-piste routes long favoured by freeriders.

The construction of the Arp pistes is the first step in a larger project of development in the Courmayeur Mont Blanc ski area, which will continue with the replacement of the Youla and Arp lifts, which are due to be replaced in 2021.

Also on the mountain, a new luxury hotel will open an outpost, as well as its main building in Courmayeur. Le Massif plans to offer guests “the best of both worlds” with its two locations — chalet La Loge du Massif in the heart of the ski slopes and an 80-room hotel close to the cable car offering quick access to the slopes.

The hotel — which is affiliated with The Leading Hotels of the World — will have modern-Alpine aesthetic with huge windows framing spectacular views, as well as access to full-day kids clubs, spa, ski concierge and ski butler services. The chalet will house a restaurant, an après-ski bar, ski club, kids club and a heated ski room. Rates start at £306 per room, per night, on a B&B basis.
