Skiing in Finland is set to become more accessible next winter, with new direct flights available from Manchester. The weekly flights, from Crystal Ski Holidays, will depart every Sunday from Manchester to Kuusamo airport starting 21 December 2014.

For the past two seasons, since re-introducing Finland into its winter programme, Crystal has operated a weekly direct flight from Gatwick to Kuusamo. The new route from Manchester will allow skiers and snowboarders in the north of the UK easier access to resorts such as Ruka, which sits in a region known for its abundant and enduring snow, just 25 minutes’ drive north of Kuusamo. Ruka has just been voted Finnish ski resort of the year by the Finnish Skiing Association.

New in Crystal’s programme for the 2014/15 ski season is Salla, a Mecca for cross-country skiing with over 160km of maintained trails, 43km of which are floodlit, among unspoiled wilderness only 20km from the Russian border. There are 13km of downhill pistes, mainly aimed at beginners, but family activities include a Northern Lights reindeer safari and a snowmobile excursion to the Russian border, only 20 km away.

Crystal also operates in a small ski resort south of Kuusamo called Iso-Syöte, hugely popular with cross-country skiers with 120km of trails.
