Investigators found no criminal wrongdoing after Schumacher's ski accident in Meribel

No one was to blame for Formula One champion Michael Schumacher’s accident in Meribel last December, crash investigators have found.

In a statement, investigators said the piste marking in Meribel “conformed to current French laws” and ruled out any blame associated with Schumacher’s rental skis.

“There were no breaches by anybody. The accident occurred in an off-piste zone,” said prosecutor Patrick Quincy, who cleared Schumacher himself of any criminal wrongdoing.

Michael Schumacher crashed head first into a rock while skiing in Meribel on 29 December. His doctors have said that had the Formula One legend not been wearing a helmet, he would have been killed.

On 30 January, doctors set about gradually waking the former racing driver from the medically induced coma he has been in since the accident. Last week, German newspapers reported that Schumacher had overcome pneumonia while in a coma.

His family said last week that Schumacher was “still in a waking up process” which could take a long time.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm added: “The family continue to strongly believe in Michael’s recovery and place all their trust in the doctors, nurses and nursing auxiliaries’ team.”

Sales of ski helmets have rocketed since Michael Schumacher’s accident.
