New skiers airline powdair will start selling tickets for next winter from 6 June and begin flying from regional airports to Sion in Switzerland on 14 December 2017.

In February, Where to Ski and Snowboard reported the launch of the new airline set up specifically for skiers and snowboarders. Now powdair has confirmed details of its service to Sion from Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Southampton, London Southend, London Luton, Duerne (Antwerp) and Hamburg.

The airline says “A range of onward transfer options to ski resorts, with options to suit every budget, will be announced in due course”.

Ticket sales will launch on the airline’s website on 6 June 2017 and powdair will fly six days a week into Sion in the heart of the Valais region, with fast onward transfer times to surrounding resorts. Verbier will take just 45 minutes, Zermatt and Saas-Fee one hour and Crans-Montana or Nendaz just half an hour.

Average one-way ticket prices will be in the region of £140 per person, with concessions for children under 12 years. Infants under 2 years of age will travel free of charge and passengers will each be able to take one set of skis or snowboard per flight for free. Baggage allowance hasn’t yet been finalised, but (gasp) powdair will give passengers a FREE drink and snack during the flight (that alone should be headline material).

The only downside is that because Sion is a Category C airport (the same as Innsbruck, in the heart of the mountains) it is more likely to be closed due to extreme weather conditions. Powdair says: “In the occasional event of poor weather affecting the airport, arrangements would be made to divert to an alternative airport (usually Berne or Basel), with onward travel to Sion provided.”

While the winter programme will finish on 16 April, powdair has said if winter goes well it will look at introducing a summer flight.
