Cortina d’Amprezzo in the Italian Dolomites opened some of its ski slopes last weekend for the first time in 12 years.

Fresh snow led to the re-opening of the Freccia Nel Cielo cable car in Cortina from 7am to 9.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings (29 and 30 June).

Hundreds of skiers and snowboarders took to the slopes in the Tofana region to enjoy the unusual conditions — brought about by 1m of fresh snow at altitude last week.

The last time Cortina d’Amprezzo opened for summer skiing was in 2001, and Marianne Moretti from Cortina said this year: “The lifts will remain open for as long conditions allow.”

With rain forecast in the village for most of this week skiers might be wise to start planning their trips for next weekend.

A lift ticket for the summer skiing, including brunch at Refuge Ra Valles, costs €45 or €25 for children under 14.
