A record number of skiers and snowboarders have been selected to represent Great Britain in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games next month.

Chemmy Alcott, James Woods and Katie Summerhayes lead the team of 19 skiers and snowboarders selected for Team GB by the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Ski Slopestyle and Ski Halfpipe make their debut in Sochi, with Team GB’s James “Woodsy” Woods hoping to match or better his performance of last year — silver at the Slopestyle World Championships. Summerhayes, just back after knee injury, took second place at the World Cup Ski Slopestyle qualifier in Gstaad, Switzerland.

‘Woodsy’ said he is “incredibly proud” to represent the UK. “To be given the opportunity to go to the Winter Olympics to do just that is amazing,” he said. “I will certainly put all my efforts into my performance, representing my country and representing the freeskiing culture.”

Chemmy Alcott, also struggling with injury since breaking her leg catastrophically in 2010, is included on the Alpine team after proving to selectors she was fit, despite her final race before selection being cancelled due to heavy snow.

Some seven snowboarders will represent Team GB during Sochi 2014, lead by Billy Morgan in the new discipline of Snowboard Slopestyle, who finished third in the 2013 World Cup finals.

Four cross-country skiers join Team GB, lead by Scotland’s Andrew Musgrave, who last weekend won the Sprint title at the Norwegian Championships and recently finished ninth in a World Cup race.

Sochi 2014 Team GB Chef de Mission Mike Hay said: “Team GB hasn’t taken a bigger contingent of skiers and snowboarders to an Olympic Winter Games since 1992, so it is great to now have 19 of them heading out to Sochi with us shortly.”

He added: “What makes it even more exciting is the fact that we are going into Sochi with a number of athletes with medal potential in events new to the Olympic Programme. These new events should attract a varied audience and hopeful inspire many more young British people to take to up winter sport.”

The Sochi Winter Olympics run from 7 to 23 February. The full Team GB line-up is as follows:

Dave Ryding (Alpine skiing), Chemmy Alcott (Alpine skiing), Andrew Musgrave (cross-country), Andrew Young (cross-country), Callum Smith (cross-country), Rosamund (Posy) Musgrave (cross-country), James Woods (Ski Slopestyle), Katie Summerhayes (Ski Slopestyle), Murray Buchan (Ski Halfpipe), James Machon (Ski Halfpipe), Rowan Cheshire (Ski Halfpipe), Emma Lonsdale (Ski Halfpipe), Zoe Gillings (Snowboard Cross), Billy Morgan (Snowboard Slopestyle), Jamie Nicholls (Snowboard Slopestyle), Jenny Jones (Snowboard Slopestyle), Aimee Fuller (Snowboard Slopestyle), Ben Kilner (Snowboard Halfpipe), Dom Harington (Snowboard Halfpipe).
