The Saas-Fee summer freestyle event, the Ride, has been cancelled for a second year running.
The event was due to take place in the Swiss resort this weekend (17/18 July), but hot weather in the Alps forced organisers to call it off.
Last year, snow melt due to heavy rain was to blame; this year it’s the heatwave currently affecting parts of Europe that has forced the decision. It has not been possible to construct the Big Air kickers that form the core of the freestyle competitions.
‘It is important that freestyle skiing is portrayed in a professional manner,’ said chief organiser Warren Smith. ‘Running the event with the athletes not being able to output their full level does not do the sport justice’.
So, once again athletes hoping to display their park skills on the Allalin glacier have been disappointed.
The Saas-Fee Ride 11 will (hopefully) take place 16 July 2011.
Summer skiing has struggled during the latest spell of hot weather, but many of the main glaciers are still offering snow sports at present. Better conditions exist in Zermatt, though it is best to hit the slopes early.
