Forget mobile apps and all-singing, all-dancing goggles, Rossignol has teamed up with innovative French company PIQ to make the world’s first smart skis.

The ski manufacturer and PIQ Sport Intelligence, a start-up company that makes advanced sports trackers have made a modified version of Rossignol’s Hero Masters, which will monitor your runs, jumps, turns and distance on the slopes.

Unlike existing gadgets that require the user to tap in to their smartphone for information, all the stats are immediately available on the ski’s built-in LED display — no separate tracking device or phone required.

For now, the skis are only in prototype stage, but PIQ and Rossignol have produced a wearable ski tracker — the PIQ Robot, a little gadget that straps on to your boots to analyse your carving by the millisecond. The gadget monitor carve angle, transition time, G-Force, jump height, rotation and air time. To get a full report on your daily, weekly or monthly bests you have to dial in to the accompanying smartphone app, though.
