Two Saas Fee restaurants have been voted top-notch in the country’s Best of Swiss Gastro Awards 2010/11.

The restaurant in the Panorama Hotel Alphubel and the Berghaus Vernissage Plattjen won prizes in the activity category, as voted for by restaurant guests back in November 2010. The competition is claimed as the only one of its kind in the country in which restaurant guests get to choose the winners.

The 3-star Alphubel is a family-friendly hotel where children can experience cookery lessons with chef Gosulino. Some of the restaurant specialities have included Chicken Wellington with potato cakes and Valais wine parfait. There are good vegetarian options too. For skiers, the hotel is less well-placed for the slopes, being at the far end of town – but a quiet spot if you don’t mind that.

Berghaus Vernissage Plattjen is on the slopes in the quieter Plattjen sector – an editorial favourite and a hut that exudes both rustic and modern charm. Menus tempt with scrumptious cakes to hearty main courses. This summer the typical menu includes dishes such as vegetarian rösti and tuna steaks with couscous – fairly pricey at 24-30 euros.

Along with the gastro winners, Saas Fee also has a new restaurant in town, Osteria degli Amici, that serves up Mediterranean cuisine.

If you’re looking to combine a summer mountain trip with some glacier skiing perhaps, Saas Fee is a good start. And you can easily spend a day or two exploring nearby Zermatt too.

For hikers and foodies, Saas is offering a new gourmet hiking package: it combines walking trails with overnight stays in places specially selected for their good food. So, you can cosy-up in one of the oldest chalets in the resort or sample the gourmet cuisine at one of the top hotels. Four nights starts at 887 SF (about £625)
Alternatively, 26 June is Gourmet Trail day, when visitors can hike along a trail in the Saas valley stopping by participating huts and sampling their culinary creations.

Extra, extra

For glacier skiing, the resort usually has 20km slopes and a freestyle park open on the Allalin glacier from June. The main event of the summer is the Saas Fee Ride, when the terrain park livens up with a major festival and some of Europe’s best talent to compete in the Big Air competitions. It all takes place on 16 July (subject to snow conditions).
