Schools and ski slopes across England are gearing up for Snowsport England’s National Schools Snowsport Week at the end of June.

A week-long promotion of skiing, snowboarding and snowsports will take place from 24 to 30 June, with the aim of encouraging children to give snowsports a go. This is the fourth year that National Schools Snowsport Week has taken place, and is set to reach more than 75 schools and 3,500 young people.

The week will be launched on 20 June at Chill Factore in Manchester, following which dry and indoor ski slopes across England will run free or discounted taster sessions for seven days, offering young people from all backgrounds the chance to give skiing, snowboarding and other snowsports a go.

The promotional week is heavily supported by Halsbury Ski, a family run Nottingham-based company that specialises in organizing school ski trips to Europe, Canada and the USA for secondary schools all over the UK.

Tim Fawke, CEO of Snowsport England, commented: “For many young people this will be their first time on skis or snowboards and for others it will be an opportunity to try a different snowsport discipline, for example freestyle, racing or ski/snowboard cross.

“We want to show that getting involved in snowsports is accessible for everyone, whatever their background, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for young people to make new friends, learn new skills and improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing.

“Snowsport England is committed to raising awareness of mental health through physical activity. We also recently launched our ‘Snow More Stigma’ mental health and wellbeing campaign to create awareness of mental health and wellbeing in snowsports.”

Keen skier and former teacher Keith Sharkey, who founded Halbury Ski, said: “I’ve been skiing for more than 40 years and love the sport. We’ve got many keen skiers and snowboarders in the team and I want to do something to encourage more people, particularly children, to catch the snowsports bug!”
