Serre Chevalier opens this weekend

Serre Chevalier Vallée, the largest stand-alone ski area in France, is opening for the season this weekend (16 December) with a good helping of snow thanks to the recent storm — and an unusual new sport to try.
The ideal setting for a unique ski holiday, Serre Chevalier Vallée has 250km of pistes and a string of pretty, traditional villages including Le Monétier les Bains, Villeneuve-La Salle les Alpes and Chantemerle-Saint Chaffrey. The 17th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site town of Briançon is also set within the valley, the highest fortified old town in France.
Serre Chevalier is forecast to receive nearly 50cm of snow in the next week, perfect for the start of the season for skiers and snowboarders — but also for fans of Snooc, a brand new sport that combines ski-touring and sledging.
The new two-in-one innovation allows non-skiers to access the mountains, by using skis and skins while wearing normal hiking boots — then sliding down on a sled quickly assembled by stacking the skis on top of each other.
Snooc was launched in December 2016, and Serre Chevalier is a pioneering resort for the sport, with Snoocs to hire, instructors and even an itinerary tour around the fortifications above the UNESCO town of Briançon, one of the beautiful areas to the south-eastern end of the Serre Chevalier Valley.
Snooc users can download the app and connect with other enthusiasts — and until 22 December, skiers, snowboarders and “Snoocers” can enjoy a discounted, low-season ski pass in Serre Chevalier: six days for €178.80 (usual prices €254.80).
Around 80 per cent of the ski area in the Serre Chevalier Valley is over 2,000m, meaning it has a long season, remaining open until 22 April 2018. To read what else is new in the valley this winter, click here.
