Les Deux-Alpes is planning a huge torchlit descent to celebrate its new blue piste

Les Deux-Alpes is planning a world record torchlit descent early next year to celebrate the completion of a new blue piste that will revolutionise the ski home for intermediates.

On Wednesday, 13 January, the French ski resort is aiming to gather around 3,000 people in its attempt to break the world record for the most skiers and snowboarders on a torchlit descent.

The descent is planned for the end of a day that will include welcome drinks and cocktails, a release of balloons and an air show to celebrate the official opening of the blue Jandri run. The new piste, which will run from the glacier at the top Les Deux-Alpes ski area to the bottom of the resort will be open to skiers from 2pm onwards.

The Jandri piste will add a much-needed alternative to icy blacks and over-crowded greens for intermediate skiers — and hopefully a far more pleasant way of getting home.

All skiers and snowboarders wishing to take part in the torchlit descent will be asked to head up toward the glacier from 3pm onwards, and after the 6pm descent will be rewarded with fireworks and mulled wine at the base of the slopes.
